Mom and Dad Trip 2009

Mom, Dad and Darrin enjoying foot reflexology. Mom had to grin-and-bear-it, while Dad made the comment that his masseur was giving his foot “what for”. In reflexology, they believe that there is a particular point on your foot that corresponds to the rest of your body as shown in the diagram picture below.

Hojeong gave Dad a haircut. Hojeong’s previous customer just in front of Dad showing off. Hojeong has been Darrin’s barber for the last 5 years, and I think she has gotten pretty good at it.

Mom, Dad and Hojeong enjoying seafood dinner. In front of us are steamed prawns and Scotland clams. We also had Canadian oysters, crabs, fried rice and veggies. I want to assure you that Mom was not being tortured or under duress. There are other pictures where she has a happy look on her face. Just couldn’t resist showing this one.

Singapore Trip

Not known to most people, Darrin has a unique ability to shoot streams of water out of his mouth. This is Darrin performing this feat at Santosa park in Singapore. Mom and Dad were busy taking pictures of the Merlion. Note that Darrin was interviewed for Heroes, but declined due to not being a fan of the show.
Raffles Hotel is the home of the Long Bar, which is where the Singapore Sling originated. The picture below shows us all having a Singapore Sling in the specially designed souvenir glasses. Mom and Dad took a couple home, which they plan to continue to make them when they get back, so be prepared.

Orchard Road is the main road in Singapore for shopping. We stayed in the Singapore Hilton Hotel, which is directly on Orchard Road.

One of the most famous landmarks in Singapore is Raffles Hotel. It is one of few holdovers from the British occupation. This hotel was built on prime real estate on the beach, but since Singapore has reclaimed a lot of land from the sea it is no longer beachfront, however it is still a very desirable location and it is still the most expensive hotel in Singapore.

Mom and Dad in front of the Merlion at Sentosa Park in Singapore. The Merlion is the symbol of Singapore. It is half lion and half mermaid. The mermaid or fish represents that Singapore started off as a fishing village. The lion is from the name “Singapura”, which means “Lion City” in Malay.

Bali, Indonesia Trip

In Bali, tourists can attract a lot of street sellers. We just stopped off at the side of the road and all of a sudden there were about 10 people trying to sell us all kinds of stuff. Our driver is to Mom’s right in the picture. Hojeong learned that giving an unhappy face will make them go away. Mom kept smiling so Darrin had to physically pull people out of our car just to close the door as those people were still trying to make a sale. Definitely an experience Mom and Dad will not soon forget.
We went to the Holy Water Temple for a visit. This picture shows Hojeong taking a picture of Mom and Dad.

Arrived in Bali on Mom and Dad’s 54th Anniversary. We went to La Lucciola for dinner, which is an upscale modern Australian restaurant with an asian twist. It is wonderfully situated on the beach and they have guards that keep the riff-raff out. Mom and Dad have now had their first meal that cost over 1 million (1.4 million) to be exact.

Back to KL

Mom, Dad and Darrin with a bunch of parrots on us. These birds were quite willing to sit and eat out of our hands. Unfortunately, one of these clever little guys took a crap on Dad’s pants (we think it was one of the red ones).

Ok, so Dad has a hornbill sitting on his shoulder and a red and white macaw on his arm. Mom has a Malaysia owl on her shoulder, a blue and yellow macaw on her arm and a white bird (cockatiel?) on her lap chewing her blouse. The arm is from the staff trying to get Mom’s bird to look at the camera.

The picture below is a friend that Dad made when we first walked into the park. The bird hopped on Dad’s back and started grooming his hair. I can only hope that this bird had honourable intentions. There is a funny video of this as well, which I suggest you get from Dad.
